Phuket Thai Cuisine. 2014 Empire Blvd, Webster, NY 14580. 585-671-8410. (12/04)
Of the Thai restaurants in Rochester, NY, Phuket Thai Cuisine is the most authentic and most flavorful. While other local Thai restaurants adjust their seasonings to cater to delicate local taste buds, Phuket cooks like they are cooking for Thais. Thai food is generally spicy hot. If you don't like spicy hot food, you shouldn't consider Thai food. Sure, the chef at Phuket will tone down your entree at your request, but what's the point. After the Thai spices are removed, all that is left is bland meat and noodles.
While I have never been to Thailand, I have eaten at numerous west coast Thai restaurants frequented by Thais. All of the west coast restaurants served food with the same or more spicy heat than Phuket. If you want to appreciate hot food start out slowly. On your first visit, when asked how spicy you want your food, ask for mild. Come back again within a few days and ask for medium and continue the process until you work up to asking for your server for Thai style. Do not use water to quench the fire in your mouth. Water doesn't work. Plain rice is more effective and dry bread will work best. The heat comes from peppers and spicy hot oil. Water does not effect the oils, bread does.
Once you have gotten used to Thai food, you will love Phuket. The wait staff are friendly, always ready to offer suggestions, and hospitable. The service is competent and quick. You will never be rushed or hassled about sharing an entree with a guest. This is not the case with all local Thai restaurants. Phuket's hospitality is more like the hospitality expressed by Thai people in general.
Phuket's lunch specials are bargains and provide a great introduction to real Thai food.
