With the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the system provides access by ocean going deep-draft vessels to the great industrial and agricultural heartland of the North American continent."  Comment: Very informative information about the shore of Lake Ontario

Government

  • U.S. Coast Guard.  "The United States Coast Guard is a military, multimission, maritime service and one of the nation’s five Armed Services. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic interests – in the nation’s ports and waterways, along the coast, on international waters, or in any maritime region as required to support national security." 
  • The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.  "The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was established by Congress in 1939 to assist the Coast Guard in promoting boating safety. It includes more than 30,000 members.... from all walks of life who receive special training so that they may be a functional part of Coast Guard Forces. Auxiliarists assist the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as public education, vessel safety checks, safety patrols, search and rescue, maritime security and environmental protection and Coast Guard Academy introduction programs for youth. Auxiliarists volunteer more than 2 million hours annually to benefit other boaters and their families."

Instruction

  • America's Boating Course.  Offered by The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.  "America's Boating Course is a unique study program covering the fundamentals of boating. The course is designed for skippers and crew of all types of watercraft. The course material covers seven chapters, which touch on:
     
    • general information about boats and maintenance
    • information to make your boating experience
    • safer and more comfortable
    • tips on being a more courteous boat operator
    • laws and regulations to which you must adhere

    The course materials include both an 80 page full color manual and interactive "courseware". The manual is your textbook, and the "courseware" is your virtual instructor. Both cover the same topics but each in its own way. The manual includes extensive diagrams, graphics and boating tips. The courseware is narrated and interactive, making use of animation, video, and sound. Both manual and courseware provide review questions so that you can verify that you truly understand the material. In addition to the lessons, the courseware includes resources, which will come in handy long after you have completed the course; printable forms (checklists, accident reports, float plans, etc.) and links to reference documents such as the Navigation Rules."

  • Lotus_SeaScouts303 · Sea Scouts - Ship 303.  "Sea Scouting is a coeducational program that specializes in maritime training for young adults from the ages of 14-20 years old. Our unit, Sea Scout Ship 303, (Based out of Webster, NY) focuses on sail-training aboard the tall-ship Lotus. This training includes weekly meetings and sailing trip in the summer months around the Lake Ontario Region.
     
    Lotus, our sail training vessel, is a 48-foot gaft rigged antique wooden schooner designed by the famous naval architect William Hand Jr., which was launched in 1918.
    During our weekly meetings and summer training, our members learn the skills necessary to run and maintain our sailing vessel as well as other aspects of maritime knowledge."  

Sailing Organizations in and Around Rochester, NY

  • Brockport Yacht Club.  "The Brockport Yacht Club is primarily a sailing club, located on the South Shore of Lake Ontario, near the mouth of Sandy Creek. It is and has been always a "Do-It-Yourself" club, in which the members take an active role in the activities and upkeep of the Club and the property."
  • Canandaigua Yacht Club.  "Canandaigua Yacht Club is a membership sailing club located on Canandaigua Lake in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The Club is dedicated to encouragement and facilitation of sailing and sailboat racing, as well as social activities for it's members. The location puts the club in easy reach of the suburbs of Rochester."
  • Genesee Yacht Club, Inc.  "The Genesee Yacht Club (GYC) was established to encourage yachting and sailing, to further the arts and sciences pertaining to seamanship, piloting, and navigation, and to provide and maintain suitable clubhouse and dockage facilities for use of the members by cooperative effort at minimum expense. The club burgee is a white bordered emerald green triangular pennant. You might also see some of our yachts with a yellow and green triangular pennant (this is our 50 year anniversary burgee)."
  • Hobie Cat Fleet 295.  "Hobie Fleet 295 is the local chapter of the North American Hobie Cat Association (NAHCA). Fleet 295 is part of Division 16 of the NAHCA which covers upstate and western New York as well as northwestern Pennsylvania and Ontario Canada. The goal of Fleet 295 is to promote the sailing and racing of beach launched catamarans, Hobie Cats in particular. Fleet 295 hosts an annual regatta, The Ontario Open, which draws competitors from Massachusetts to Michigan and Virginia to Canada. Since 1978, the Ontario Open Regatta has also served as an NAHCA regional an national championship events."
  • Iroquois Sail and Power Squadron.  "Our primary mission is to provide boating related education and foster social and fraternal relationships among our members in and around Rochester NY, to ensure all boaters can enjoy their respective water related activities, and do so in a safe and educated way."
  • Lake Ontario Sailing.  "Lake Ontario Sailing was a only a gleam in my eye about eighteen months ago. It was during Christmas break that I decided to do something with my spare time. The sailing season is short on Lake Ontario, so what better way to enjoy the off-season then to write about sailing."
  • The Newport Yacht Club.  "Newport Yacht Club was organized in 1936 through the efforts of the late Oscar Kuolt and several others. Its charter as a membership corporation under New York State law clearly stated its purpose: 'To promote the sport of small boat sailing and small boat racing.'"

    promote the science of Seamanship and Navigation; and to provide a suitable Club House and Anchorage

  • The Oswego Yacht Club.  "The Oswego Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs on Lake Ontario.   Founded in 1881 by local banker John T. Mott, the Oswego Yacht Club was a vibrant force in Lake Ontario yachting. One of the founding clubs in the Lake Yacht Racing Associastion, Oswego was the host of many yachting events. Early in the depression, the Club disbanded and remained dormant for some 50 years. In 1980 a group of local boaters reformed the Club and quickly celeberated its Centennial Anniversary. Once again, the Oswego Yacht Club has become an active participant in Lake Ontario Yachting. Located in Oswego, New York, the club hosts a variety activities for all boaters."
  • Pultneyville Mariners: "Located in the picturesque village of Pultneyville, the Pultneyville Mariners Club boasts a park-like setting on the finest inlet between Rochester and Sodus. Tree and grass covered acres with a sandy beach provide the most relaxed setting for weekend or even week long camping get-aways. Just a half hour east of Rochester, you feel a world away from your hectic daily routine!"
  • Pultneyville Yacht Club.  "The Club is located in the hamlet of Pultneyville, on the shores of Lake Ontario. Situated between the City of Rochester and Sodus Bay, Pultneyville Yacht Club was organized in the fall of 1943 and founded as Pultneyville Yacht Club in 1944. The purpose was then the same as today: " A club dedicated to good fellowship on land and good fun and sportsmanship at sea". Charter member and Past Commodore Fredrick W. Cornwall, Jr. says that is what has made the club what it is today. Pultneyville Yacht Club started as a fleet of Lightnings, there were 12 and "The Scud" by 1950. Most of the boats were homebuilt "kit" Lightnings. Today Pultneyville Yacht Club is home to about 110 boats, both sail and power from 18 to 36 feet in length."
  • Rochester Canoe Club.  "The Rochester Canoe Club (RCC) in Rochester, New York, is an informal family sailing club interested in promoting one design sailboat sailing and racing. The Club is very family oriented with members of all ages."
  • Rochester Yacht Club.  "Our purpose is to promote and encourage interest and instruction in areas of seamanship, racing, and the finest traditions of yachting.  We sponsor sailboat racing at the Club level, in addition to hosting Regattas at both the National and International levels. RYC coordinates Club Cruises, rendezvous, and numerous other recreational boating activities. There are swimming, safety, and sailing instruction programs for members and their families."
  • Sodus Bay Yacht Club.  "The Sodus Bay Yacht Club located on the best natural harbor on the South shore of Lake Ontario, is a member supported organization dedicated to promote and encourage interests in boats and boating. With a full social and racing calendar SBYC continues a rich tradition."
