The Basics of Birding Course Buffalo Audubon Society's Iroquois Observations! Course Presentation: The Basics of Birding Instructor: Brett M. Ewald / naturalist-biologist http://www.LakeshoreNatureTours.com and http://www.birdlink.info/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi Course Description: WNY is one of the top regions in the country for birdwatching, hosting an incredible diversity of breeding and migrant species. This in-depth class will help you identify and appreciate the many species of birds, through the use of slides, hands-on equipment, and field trips. The three evening classes will focus on many aspects of birding, including identification skills, seasonal occurrence, and regional hotspots. We will also discuss backyard birdwatching through the use of feeders and birdhouses, and compare some of the tools of the trade - binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guides - and how to take care of them. The two field trips will provide an opportunity to observe and learn about a wide variety of species at local habitats. They are timed to capture the diversity of fall migration. The first trip will focus on songbirds and other passerines (warblers, vireos, thrushes, flycatchers, woodpeckers, and more), while the second will highlight an array of waterfowl, waterbirds, and later migrants, such as sparrows. September 17 Stop Noise Pollution From Car Stereos Rochester Soundcape Society Meeting Topic: Noise Pollution From Car Stereos. James Kaufmann, founder of the Rochester Soundscape Society, said that "Rochester citizens live in a world of constant rumble, thump, and boom. This is puzzling, given that we have a law (Code 75-12) which declares amplified sound audible at fifty feet or more from a vehicle in a public street to be illegal and subject to ticketing and towing." Rochester's Mayor, William Johnson, seems to understand the gravity of the problem. On May 30, 2001, he wrote that "when one of these vehicles cruises down a street, 100 or more homes may be subjected to its noise pollution." He raised Rochester's hopes for peace and quiet when he stated, "Just as police radar detectors get people to slow down, Noise Enforcement details can get people to turn the volume down." But a year and a half later, Rochester's soundscape is still miserable. Area composer Mark Olivieri describes a typical incident, driving down Main Street, with his wife and infant: "We heard and felt this extremely low frequency, powerful sound. When you roll up your windows, and you still have to plug your baby's ears to protect against damage, you have a serious problem." Kaufmann has collected over 160 signatures of City of Rochester and Monroe County residents who feel the boom car situation is unreasonable, and sent it to the Mayor, City Council, and Chief of Police. "Chief Duffy called me personally to express his support," he said. "I commend him for his apparent commitment." Some, however, are more skeptical. Athel Smiley, a city homeowner, recently documented the license plates of 37 vehicles with excessively loud stereos in one hour's time on Arnett Boulevard: "We can only get a small percentage of them, because they pass by so fast." During this time, he saw only one police car, which drove by a parked boom car without doing anything about it. Kaufmann noted that Rochester has a special interest in solving its noise problem--its musical tradition. Boom cars manage to penetrate such well-isolated spaces as the Ciminelli Lounge, Howard Hanson Hall, the Hochstein Performance Hall, and the world-renowned Kilbourn Hall, making a mockery out of student recitals and community performances by stealing precious quiet moments in the music. Courtney Richards, one of Rochester's many music lovers, says she attends concerts at Kilbourn Hall "and can hear boom cars and other loud vehicles clearly while the concert is in progress. These noises detract greatly from the quality of the experience and are surely frustrating to the performers." According to Kaufmann, "With so many committed people, and with so much at stake, Rochester should be able to tame the boom car monster. Let the whole world watch to see if it has the courage and tenacity to do so. Until then, the soundtrack of its residents' lives, indoors and out, will be the same." Aural-Visual Convergence AURAL-VISUAL CONVERGENCE at Visual Studies Workshop! High-tech ensemble UFORKESTRA combines live music, 16 mm film, and digital multimedia. When: Two evening performances Friday and Saturday, September 27th and 28 -- 8:00 p.m. Where: Visual Studies Workshop Auditorium, 31 Prince Street, Rochester Admission: $6.00 at the door "Aural-Visual Convergence" is the moniker for a performing arts event headlined by techno-rockers Uforkestra, combining the work of onstage musicians with film and multimedia artistry - all to benefit Rochester's Visual Studies Workshop. Founded in 1996, Uforkestra is a high-tech improv ensemble cast in the grand tradition of sonic pioneers like Frank Zappa and Negativland. The band combines high-powered musicianship with aural/visual observations of human behavior, an affinity for the paranormal, and a near-dysfunctional hankering for technology. The group's stage performances feature diverse original songs as well as spoken word excursions over sonic atmospheres composed on the spot. A panoramic array of visual accompaniments joins the audio presentation. Moreover, clear digital sound is emphasized at reasonable volume levels so that listeners don’t go home with injured hearing. "Uforkestra and the Visual Studies Workshop is a unique collaboration," says VSW professor Richard Della Costa, a key contributor to the series. "We have explored the extensive film and video archive at the Workshop to find images and sequences that complement the musical world that Uforkestra creates for every performance. What we have found is a melding of image and sound that has power, emotional intensity and an opportunity for audience participation. The result is a journey through time and space, a most effective mechanism for delivering impressions and experience." Uforkestra members include Dirk Malavase on basses, synths, and engineering; Jamie Bryce on electronic percussion and sampling; John Neel on graphics and animation; and Doug Sprei on guitars, synths, vocals and songwriting. Contact the ensemble at (585) 330-5301 or visit www.uforkestra.com for more information. Also visit the Visual Studies Workshop home page at www.vsw.org.
