- Aural-Visual Convergence
- AURAL-VISUAL CONVERGENCE at Visual Studies Workshop! High-tech ensemble UFORKESTRA combines live music, 16 mm film, and digital multimedia. When: Two evening performances Friday and Saturday, September 27th and 28 -- 8:00 p.m. Where: Visual Studies Workshop Auditorium, 31 Prince Street, Rochester Admission: $6.00 at the door "Aural-Visual Convergence" is the moniker for a performing arts event headlined by techno-rockers Uforkestra, combining the work of onstage musicians with film and multimedia artistry - all to benefit Rochester's Visual Studies Workshop. Founded in 1996, Uforkestra is a high-tech improv ensemble cast in the grand tradition of sonic pioneers like Frank Zappa and Negativland. The band combines high-powered musicianship with aural/visual observations of human behavior, an affinity for the paranormal, and a near-dysfunctional hankering for technology. The group's stage performances feature diverse original songs as well as spoken word excursions over sonic atmospheres composed on the spot. A panoramic array of visual accompaniments joins the audio presentation. Moreover, clear digital sound is emphasized at reasonable volume levels so that listeners donĂt go home with injured hearing. "Uforkestra and the Visual Studies Workshop is a unique collaboration," says VSW professor Richard Della Costa, a key contributor to the series. "We have explored the extensive film and video archive at the Workshop to find images and sequences that complement the musical world that Uforkestra creates for every performance. What we have found is a melding of image and sound that has power, emotional intensity and an opportunity for audience participation. The result is a journey through time and space, a most effective mechanism for delivering impressions and experience." Uforkestra members include Dirk Malavase on basses, synths, and engineering; Jamie Bryce on electronic percussion and sampling; John Neel on graphics and animation; and Doug Sprei on guitars, synths, vocals and songwriting. Contact the ensemble at (585) 330-5301 or visit www.uforkestra.com for more information. Also visit the Visual Studies Workshop home page at www.vsw.org.
